Opinion | Foreign investment growth reflects long-term confidence in China's development

Data released by China's Ministry of Commerce recently shows that during the January-April period, 20,113 new overseas-invested firms were established across China, up 6.8 percent year on year. The actual use of foreign direct investment (FDI) totaled 287.69 billion yuan (about 42 billion U.S. dollars) during the same period, down 10.3 percent from the previous year.

The data also shows that the number of overseas-invested enterprises in China has risen for three consecutive years to surpass 530,000, with total accumulated FDI exceeding 3.6 trillion U.S. dollars.

Shen Yujing, Deputy Director of the Macro Department at the Chongyang Institute for Financial Studies, Renmin University of China, said in an interview with China Youth Daily that foreign investment growth reflects long-term confidence in China's development.

Shen said that the continued expansion of foreign-invested enterprises in China shows that rising global geopolitical uncertainties have not disrupted foreign investors' long-term strategic commitment to the Chinese market. Amid a volatile and complex international environment, China's development strengths have demonstrated even greater resilience and potential, making the country increasingly attractive to foreign capital.

The data shows that during the January-April period, the number of newly established overseas-invested firms in China increased, while the actual use of FDI declined. Shen said that the simultaneous rise and fall indicates that foreign investment in China is undergoing a phase of structural adjustment. Foreign investment logic has shifted from a model of "short-term, low-cost arbitrage and quick returns" to a long-term value co-creation rooted in deep engagement with the Chinese market. (By Guo Xinguan / China Youth Daily)
